Police clear Opera House, ferries cancelled

The Sydney Opera House precinct was evacuated and the Manly ferry wharf searched after information NSW Police received via social media.
Police said the operation, in which the forecourt of the Opera House was cleared about 2pm on Thursday, was a precautionary measure. Searches by officers at Manly and Opera House concluded just over an hour later with nothing uncovered.

Fairfax Media understands the operation was sparked by a bomb threat on board a Manly ferry.

NSW Transport said the 1.20pm ferry from Manly to Circular Quay was cancelled due to the operation, while other journeys on that route were delayed.

Craig Gill was inside the Opera House buying tickets to an upcoming show when everyone was told to get out.

"I thought it was part of a show," he said.

Mr Gill said it took some time to evacuate everyone from the building but there was no panic as no one was really sure what was going on.

"I got the tickets and that's all that matters."

The Opera House's Bennelong Restaurant continued to take bookings for Thursday night, with a receptionist saying: "It's business as usual."

A Sydney Opera House tour guide said she had been leading tourists around the building when police arrived.

"My tour was stopped mid-tour ... now I can't get back in," she told AAP
